WELFARE WARRIORS IN ACTION

On August 8th, QEJ’s Welfare Organizing Project officially launched our grassroots organizing effort “Welfare Warriors”.  This group of low-income LGBT and gender non-conforming activists held a community speak-out, and released a “Points of Unity” visions statement signed on to by over 40 organizations.

BEYOND SAME-SEX MARRIAGE:

A New Strategic Vision

This summer, QEJ led a group of national leaders of the LGBT movement to draft a vision statement about how we should be reframing marriage politics in the USA.  The statement was initially supported by hundreds of activists, scholars, lawyers, artists, organizers and leaders from across the country.

To read the Executive Summary of this statement, go here.

IMPORTANT VICTORY FOR TRANSGENDER HOMELESS!

Early this year, QEJ and our allies achieved a historic victory in changing discriminatory policies at New York City’s Department of Homeless Services.  The new policy provides safety and dignity for transgender homeless shelter residents.

IMMIGRATION REFORM AND THE LGBT COMMUNITY

QEJ is working to make sure that the federal immigration reform that is happening is humane and progressive, and inclusive of the needs of LGBT immigrants.  We coordinated the work of LGBT immigrant groups across the country, to draft a Vision Statement, which is now being used by LGBT organizations, immigrant organizations and LGBT immigrant groups, to educate allies and elected officials about our needs.

Our Mission
2lilredbar.jpg

Queers for Economic Justice is a progressive non-profit organization committed to promoting economic justice in a context of sexual and gender liberation. Our goal is to challenge and change the systems that create poverty and economic injustice in our communities, and to promote an economic system that embraces sexual and gender diversity. We are committed to the principle that access to social and economic resources is a fundamental right, and we work to create social and economic equity through grassroots organizing, public education, advocacy and research. We do this work because although poor queers have always been a part of both the gay rights and economic justice movements, they have been, and continue to be, largely invisible in both movements. This work will always be informed by the lived experiences and expressed needs of queer people in poverty.
